Mamman Dzukogi There is currently a burgeoning book development initiative in Niger state that is not anywhere in Nigeria. In fact, writers have long concluded that, it not anywhere in Africa. And you know what? The scheme seeks to publish a teenage author from primary or secondary school each month of the year.
Ten of such teen authors published in were recently unveiled by the Provost, Niger State College of Education; Prof. It is a non-governmental organisation solely dedicated to promoting teen authors and artists. He made the remark at the closing ceremony of the Nigerian Festival of Teen Authors: Hosting and catering for such number of teenagers for three or so days is no mean task by all standards.
But you did it. It is my hope therefore that history if not anyone else shall remember this and do justice where the need arises. Bmitosai; Peter Kwange, published by Prof. The scheme is not exclusive to Niger state. The foundation has Coordinators in twenty five states of the federation where the scheme shall commence by the end of this year.
Already, Kebbi and Katsina States have taken the lead in establishing art centres in their states. The Foundation engages the mentees in other forms of artistic expressions like spoken word, performance poetry, songs, painting, photography, theatre and dances.
It is the only of its kind in Nigeria. A fact that Prof. Its uniqueness lays in its special focus on tending brilliant young minds, on practically coaching them in writing, and on further taking the big step of ensuring that their works are published.
There can be no better place, better deal, for any artistically talented young mind. The project is only based in Minna but the beneficiary students cut across the states of the federation.
This is one accommodating power of Niger State especially Minna where people of diverse backgrounds from other states of Nigeria form a huge population in the state. The teen authorship scheme and indeed, the Foundation are pan-Nigerian programmes and outfits.
Again, Professor Sule who has been a keen watcher and participant of literary activities in Niger State made it clearere: You will notice that these young authors, by their names, hail from different parts of Nigeria — a testimony to the national spread and all-inclusive talent development programme of the Hilltop Arts Foundation.
Imagine, if our state branches do the same in the 36 states of the federation and Abuja, count how many new writers Nigeria would have produced in five years?
The body of thinkers become not only the conscience of the society but an effect police against the manifestation and entrenchment of all sorts of ills. This is the strategy of the Foundation. In fact, the Foundation started there, in Minna.
It is discouraging that big sponsorship has not come despite being featured by BBC Hausa, NTA and the regular features in our national dailies but nothing.
I think Niger State Government should sit with us and discuss this facility.
We need to renovate and put new facilities here, we need to repackage this place. Talba visited us in and supported us. This is about children with special talents. This is about a future of Nigeria being created from Niger state.
There is nowhere like this in Nigeria. Have you seen something like this in Africa? Have you read an interview by Laura Kaminski; an American citizen following our activities from America.
